The Walking People: A Book Review

by Glenna Gerard

The Walking People is the stories of a people that walked across the Bering Straights and the lands we now know as the United States of America. It is the story of a people who valued learning above being right and finding ways to honor the needs of all concerned no matter how different they might be. A people who learned how to live creatively with paradox. It is the story of a people who walked their talk no matter how challenging the times.

Paula Underwood was one the last of the keepers of her people's oral history. Before she died she created a wonderful gift for us all by making this history available in the form of a set of written stories that trace the steps and life lessons of her people across time.

At the very least this book is an epic story. At most it is a window into a people's spirit and way of life and an offering of powerful lessons that we can use in our families, our communities, our organizations and our world. There is deep wisdom alongside, wild and wooly adventures and heartwarming homecomings.

As you read you may often hear yourself nodding in recognition. For me the reading was enlightening, insightful, provocative, and wonderfully useful in walking across the terrain of my life and its challenges. I was sorry to reach the last of the pages.
